Continuous Discussions (#c9d9) Podcast: Episode 36 – ITIL and DevOps

This morning on Continuous Discussions we had ITIL and DevOps go into the ring – and only one came out the winner: The SERVICE.

We had some of the best minds in the ITIL/ITSM/DevOps space to talk to us about how they help organizations adopt DevOps principles that are aligned with the spirit behind the ITIL principles.

Some of what we discussed:

  • What are the similarities and the differences between DevOps and ITIL?
  • Do they complement each other, or are they at odds?
  • How can teams who already subscribe to an ITIL-way of working adopt DevOps practices, and where should they focus their efforts?
  • How you can foster DevOps practices in large, ITIL-based organizations?

  1. CraigB says:

Pretty good conversation.. but oops, a bit of good old ITIL bashing involved.. I’m sure that DevOps could be written up 2000 pages.
However, to my mind, it’s disappointing that so many ITIL based implementations have slid into or cemented in bureaucracy and rigidity. I’d suggest, a bit like many large scale waterfall implementations for software projects.
But ITIL itself does not advocate this bureaucracy and rigidity – at all. The greatest failing is these implementations is not embracing continual improvement and automation – as advocated in ITIL. If ITIL is deployed with a continual improvement emphasis, embracing automation and with appropriate culture builders then it actually looks a lot like like DevOps / CI / CD with additional service assurance and strategy wrappers to support it.
So it’s not a ‘one or the other’ conversation (“ITIL vs DevOps”). Rather, its a ‘focus on outcomes’ conversation. As ITIL advocates, employ enough process and automation to support business needs and outcomes.
